OmanI Mountain Destination: A High-Altitude Haven
Oman is making another huge investment into transforming its tourism landscape with the Omani Mountain Destination. The OMD is a $2.4 billion development that combines sports, wellness, sustainability, and cultural heritage. Located at Jabal Al Akhdar, this initiative is part of the Sultanate’s Vision 2040, which aims to enhance socio-economic inclusion, attract high-performance athletes, and showcase Oman’s natural and cultural treasures. The project highlights a commitment to net-zero operations, community integration, and diverse tourism offerings that cater to a wide range of interests.
At the heart of this wellness focus is Jabal Al Akhdar, or “The Green Mountain,” a gem of the Al Hajar Mountain range. Renowned for its cooler climate and stunning landscapes, the region rarely exceeds 32°C, with an average temperature of 22°C year-round.
From October to April, the mountains come alive with vibrant vegetation, earning their verdant name. Terraced gardens flourish with Damask roses, pomegranates, apricots, and peaches, creating a sensory experience that is both visually and aromatically captivating. Visitors in April can witness the rose season, a highlight of the region, when fragrant Damask roses blanket the terraces in bloom.

About Omani Mountain Resort
01 Sports Facilities and Training at Altitude
Jabal Al Akhdar is home to one of the world’s highest high-altitude sports training centres, sitting at 2,400 metres above sea level—surpassing facilities like the Aquagranda Olympic Training Centre in Livigno, Italy. This training destination features:
- A “Dark Sky Zone” designed to enhance focus and resilience for athletes.
- Facilities for extreme sports, including mountain biking, bungee jumping, and rock climbing.
- An escarpment walk and public spaces promoting active lifestyles.
These facilities cater to elite athletes seeking physical and mental conditioning while attracting adventure enthusiasts worldwide.
02 Wellness & healthy living
The development incorporates “The Vessel,” a dedicated health and wellness village, alongside amphitheatres, museums, and biodiversity centres. These spaces focus on holistic well-being through:
- Spa and wellness retreats offering unique, high-altitude experiences.
- Agrotourism activities, including rose water distillation and farming.
- Parks, public spaces, and family-friendly recreational areas.
The region’s cooler climate, with temperatures averaging 22°C, complements these wellness offerings, providing a serene environment for rejuvenation.
03 Net Zero & Community focused
Oman’s Vision 2040 prioritises sustainability, and the Omani Mountain Destination reflects this with innovative measures:
- 100% renewable energy powering the development.
- A 40% reduction in embodied carbon.
- 85% of the area pedestrianised, with extensive cycleways.
In a groundbreaking move, legislative changes enable local communities to invest in 10% of the land, fostering socio-economic inclusion and empowering residents to benefit from rising property values. The project is set to create 5,000 full-time jobs, reinforcing its community-driven ethos.
04 Oman's Varied TOURISM OFFERING
Oman’s “cluster” approach enhances the diversity of tourism experiences within easy reach. The area surrounding Jabal Al Akhdar includes:
- Traditional rose water distillation and agricultural produce like pomegranates, walnuts, and peaches.
- Honeybee breeding and agrotourism activities.
- Diving adventures featuring unique marine life, including non-migratory humpback whales, whale sharks, and sea turtles.
These offerings, combined with the region’s lush terraced gardens and rich cultural experiences, make Oman a destination that blends luxury, adventure, and tradition.
