Event carbon footprint measurement: measure the footprint and the claim with the same discipline.

A net zero pledge is easy to publish. It is much harder to defend eighteen months later, when a journalist, an auditor, or a rival bid team asks what was measured, what was modelled, and what was simply assumed.
A defined boundary. Every category labelled measured, modelled, or estimated. Visitor travel, the largest and least certain line, given a stated range rather than a single confident number. A figure built to be inspected, not only accepted.

A tenth of the world's output and employment depends on the visitor economy

Living Lab’s first economic model was for the Singapore Grand Prix in 2012. In 2025 we became a software platform: government-grade intelligence for the visitor economy

In the last 12 months we have deployed at more than 700 events. They delivered 14 million room nights and over US$12bn in gross value added

What does Living Lab do for event carbon footprint measurement?

Event carbon footprint measurement. Living Lab connects venue utility accounts, travel bookings, ticketing, and supplier invoices the same way it connects economic signals, and applies the same source-and-assumption discipline to the emissions result, so a carbon claim and a public-value claim can be defended in the same room. Reference data is published by the UNFCCC.

Reports emissions and sustainability performance for a period already incurred: an event, a reporting year, a funding cycle. Categorised, each line labelled by how it was derived, with a stated boundary. Whether the reduction or offset programme delivered against a counterfactual. Signal137 produces the evidence a GHG Protocol or ISO 20121 process requires, without claiming certification against it.

The forward question, how climate exposure changes future demand, physical and transition risk across a hold or a calendar, belongs to climate and transition risk, built on Demand137. This page owns what was produced; that page owns what is coming.

Signal137Whether to publish a specific emissions figure in a report or a bidA defined boundary, each component labelled measured, modelled, or estimatedA figure that survives a direct question about how it was built
Signal137Where should the reporting boundary sit?An explicit scope statement: venue only, full lifecycle, or visitor travel includedThe boundary matches the claim being made
Signal137Is the offset or reduction programme delivering what it claims?A before-and-after comparison against a stated counterfactualA verifiable change reported, not an assumed one
Signal137How do we meet a funder's or host's disclosure condition?A comparable, traceable format the funder can check line by lineFunding and hosting eligibility kept, on a claim that holds up
Signal137Does this cover visitor travel, or only the venue?Visitor travel modelled from ticket data and mode share, with a stated rangeThe largest category is in, and its uncertainty is visible
Signal137Some of our data is only an estimate. What then?Reported as an estimate, with the benchmark or proxy statedAn estimate is never dressed as a measurement
Signal137What if the measured figure is worse than expected?Reported as measuredA figure published only when favourable is a marketing choice, not a claim
Signal137Does this replace our GHG Protocol or ISO 20121 process? No. It produces the evidence and assumption trail those frameworks requireAlignment, not certification, and stated as such
Signal137Can we defend the carbon claim and the economic claim together? Both built from the same evidence structure, on the same disciplineOne method in the room, not two
BothWho holds this, and where?Model, data, and a trained team inside your jurisdictionThe capability survives the change of sustainability lead or auditor

Major events and the people who live there

A major event is a rallying point for civic pride, and just as easily a rallying point for protest. The difference is usually whether residents can see what the event does for their street, in terms they recognise, before the road closures start.

Per hotel, not a city average

During the 2026 World Cup, host-city hotel rates rose 13% on average. Miami rose 30.3%. New York fell 4.5%. The average was true and useless: it would have told all 16 cities the same thing, and been wrong for most of them.
